SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

Silicon metal is distinct from ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, silica, silicones and polysilicon. Aluminium casting requires confirmation of the GB/T 2881 grade, Fe/Al/Ca limits, sizing and target alloy; silicone or polysilicon routes additionally require agreed B, P, C, Ti and other trace elements, reactivity and lot COA. The market names 421, 441 and 553 are search aliases, not guarantees until mapped to a formal SKU/TDS. Conventional steel silicon addition or deoxidation normally uses ferrosilicon; powder, 3N/4N, solar, electronic and battery grades are outside this general page's default supply scope.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

Industrial silicon is generally carbothermically reduced from quartz and carbonaceous reductants in a submerged-arc or dedicated electric furnace, tapped into a ladle, refined, then cast, cooled, crushed, screened and tested into commercial lump or granule. Feed mix, furnace and refining practice vary by producer.

GB/T 2881—2023 distinguishes grades by Fe, Al and Ca limits; nominal Si = 100% − (Fe + Al + Ca). Market aliases 421, 441 and 553 are not complete order specifications; silicone or polysilicon routes additionally require agreed trace elements and reactivity.

APPLICATION METHOD

Application method and effect validation

For aluminium casting, make a mass balance from initial/target Si, returns and scrap carry-in, measured product chemistry and site recovery, ensuring dry addition, complete dissolution, mixing and resampling. Upstream silicone and polysilicon uses require different impurity, sizing and reactivity acceptance criteria.

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Keep dry and protected from rain and moisture; never add wet feed to molten metal, and control crushing dust, sparks, ignition sources and PPE for the actual form.
  • Lump and fine powder have different risks; powder or special sizing requires transport and handling confirmation against the supplier's latest SDS, destination rules and a dedicated dust-risk assessment.
