SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

Confirm base-iron S/O, treatment method, target residual Mg, section thickness and interfering elements before selecting Mg, RE, Ca, Al and size. More RE is not always better; clean feeds and heavy sections require review for chunky graphite. A nodulariser does not replace post-inoculant and is not recommended as a CGI treatment alloy; CGI requires a validated dedicated alloy and closed-loop control.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

RE-Mg-FeSi is generally prepared by controlled Mg/RE alloying into an FeSi base, followed by casting, crushing and screening. Mg is highly reactive, so the manufacturing route and safety controls are strongly producer-specific.

SPECIFICATIONS & PACKAGING

Grades, specifications, indicators and packaging

SKUs should distinguish Mg, RE, Si, Ca, Al and size. More RE is not inherently better; low/no-RE and medium/high-RE grades depend on base-iron purity, interfering elements and section size.

Method
Use a validated sandwich, pocket or covered-ladle method; match sizing, ladle geometry, cover/conditioner and tapping stream, then deslag and post-inoculate.
Quantity determination
Balance from base-iron S/O, target residual Mg, product Mg/RE, treatment temperature, ladle and site Mg recovery, then correct with microscopy, residual Mg and trials; do not reuse a fixed legacy rate.
Expected effects
  • The process objective is the target nodular state; final graphite form, residual Mg and mechanical properties require chemistry, microscopy and casting validation
Limits and risks
  • Under-treatment causes poor nodularity; over-treatment can increase slag, fume and excessive residual Mg/RE
  • The reaction is vigorous; moisture, fines, temperature and ladle condition affect safety and recovery

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Keep dry, minimise fines and follow molten-metal procedures; magnesium reaction can generate splash and MgO fume.
  • SDS/PSI must reflect actual Mg, RE, form and destination regulations.
