QUICK DECISION

Four answers before reading the technical detail

This section supports initial screening; final grade, addition and effects require operating conditions, formal documents and plant validation.

01

What it is

Used for combined deoxidation and Mn/Si adjustment in steelmaking and steel foundries, and for cast-iron melt correction without replacing inoculation.

02

What it does

  • Combined deoxidation
  • Mn/Si adjustment
  • Alloying
03

Where it fits

  • Combined tap deoxidation and Mn/Si rough alloying, or ladle trimming
  • Post-melt or ladle Mn/Si adjustment
04

Boundary not to miss

  • The fixed Mn/Si ratio may not match the steel target; oxidising slag lowers recovery
  • Standard SiMn is not a cast-iron inoculant

SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

SiMn is a compound alloy with a fixed Mn/Si ratio. Check both target elements plus C, P and S; it is neither two separate alloys nor a FeSi-based inoculant.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

Silicomanganese is generally carbothermically reduced from manganese-bearing feed, silica source, reductants and fluxes in a submerged-arc/electric furnace, then cast, crushed and screened.

  1. 01Batch Mn source, silica source and reductants
  2. 02Submerged-arc/electric reduction smelting
  3. 03Tap and separate slag/metal
  4. 04Cast, cool, crush and screen
  5. 05Test Mn/Si/C/P/S and pack

SPECIFICATIONS & PACKAGING

Grades, specifications, indicators and packaging

Manage standard, low-carbon or low-phosphorus families, focusing on the fixed Mn/Si ratio and C, P, S constraints.

  1. 01Confirm SiMn grade
  2. 02Check Mn/Si ratio and impurities
  3. 03Match sizing to equipment
  4. 04Confirm pack and lot analysis

GRADES & SPECIFICATIONS

ORDER SPECIFICATION CONFIRMATION

What must be confirmed before this becomes an order specification

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

  1. 01Confirm the product, grade, application and supply scope
  2. 02Fix guaranteed chemistry, sizing, form and packing in the quotation and order
  3. 03Agree sampling, test methods, acceptance rules and lot COA fields
  4. 04Confirm the required TDS, SDS/PSI, labels and delivery documents

SELECTION AND COMPARISON

INDUSTRY APPLICATION

Industry, furnace, material and addition point

Confirm the process position before method and quantity calculations; an application relationship for one furnace or material must not be copied to another.

01

Steelmaking plants

Combined tap deoxidation and Mn/Si rough alloying, or ladle trimming

Furnace / equipment
BOF/EAF tapping and LF/ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy steel
02

Steel foundries

Post-melt or ladle Mn/Si adjustment

Furnace / equipment
EAF, induction furnace and ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy cast steel

APPLICATION METHOD

Application method and effect validation

Balance Mn and Si separately; the first limiting element determines addition. A fixed per-tonne ratio is insufficient.

  1. 01Confirm initial/target Mn and Si
  2. 02Calculate two-element limiting addition
  3. 03Add in tapping stream or ladle and mix
  4. 04Resample Mn, Si and C/P/S

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

From operating objective to effect verification

Each application explains the role, method, quantity principle and risk boundary; the final proposal is confirmed against operating conditions and lot documents.

01

Steelmaking plants

Combined tap deoxidation and Mn/Si rough alloying, or ladle trimming

Furnace / equipment
BOF/EAF tapping and LF/ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy steel
Method
Choose the point from oxygen potential, target Mn/Si and slag, using tapping flow or stirring for dissolution.
Quantity determination
Calculate Mn and Si separately; let the limiting element determine the dose, then check the other element and C/P/S.
Expected effects
  • Provides combined deoxidation and joint Mn/Si adjustment
Limits and risks
  • The fixed Mn/Si ratio may not match the steel target; oxidising slag lowers recovery
02

Steel foundries

Post-melt or ladle Mn/Si adjustment

Furnace / equipment
EAF, induction furnace and ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy cast steel
Method
Add from melt analysis and homogenise; induction practice must not copy an EAF oxidising-slag regime.
Quantity determination
Determine from a two-element Mn/Si balance and site recovery.
Expected effects
  • Deoxidation with joint chemistry adjustment
Limits and risks
  • Standard SiMn is not a cast-iron inoculant

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Keep dry, control dust/fines and follow hot-metal charging procedures.

This section does not replace the company's final SDS/PSI or the plant safety procedure.

REFERENCE AND ORDER BOUNDARY

Use industry references to understand, then order documents to confirm

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

DOCUMENTS & MEDIA

Images, TDS, SDS and COA

Document availability depends on the product, lot, destination market and order agreement.

TDS

Confirms product identity, guaranteed indicators, sizing, form and packing.

SDS / PSI

Confirms storage, handling, protection and market-specific safety information.

COA

Links a specific lot to test items, results, methods and issue information.
