QUICK DECISION

Four answers before reading the technical detail

This section supports initial screening; final grade, addition and effects require operating conditions, formal documents and plant validation.

01

What it is

Used to adjust manganese in steelmaking, steel foundries and iron foundries, with a supporting deoxidation role in suitable practices.

02

What it does

  • Manganese adjustment
  • Supporting deoxidation
  • Alloying
03

Where it fits

  • Tap alloying or ladle trimming
  • Charge calculation or post-melt Mn correction
04

Boundary not to miss

  • High-carbon grades may exceed the carbon target; oxidising slag lowers recovery
  • Excess Mn may promote carbides/white iron and reduce machinability

SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

Select high-, medium- or low-carbon grade from the metal grade, carbon target and addition point, then check P, S and recovery. Mn adjustment is not deep desulfurisation and does not replace cast-iron inoculation.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

High-carbon ferromanganese is commonly reduced from manganese ore, reductants and fluxes in an electric furnace; medium/low-carbon grades may add oxygen or other refining stages.

  1. 01Batch manganese ore, reductants and fluxes
  2. 02Electric-furnace reduction smelting
  3. 03Tap, separate slag/metal and cast
  4. 04Refine medium/low-carbon grades as required
  5. 05Crush, screen, test and pack

SPECIFICATIONS & PACKAGING

Grades, specifications, indicators and packaging

Manage as high-, medium- and low-carbon families with Mn, C, Si, P and S as key indicators; company TDS must define guarantees and sizing.

  1. 01Select carbon grade
  2. 02Check Mn and C/Si/P/S
  3. 03Match furnace or ladle sizing
  4. 04Confirm pack and COA

GRADES & SPECIFICATIONS

ORDER SPECIFICATION CONFIRMATION

What must be confirmed before this becomes an order specification

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

  1. 01Confirm the product, grade, application and supply scope
  2. 02Fix guaranteed chemistry, sizing, form and packing in the quotation and order
  3. 03Agree sampling, test methods, acceptance rules and lot COA fields
  4. 04Confirm the required TDS, SDS/PSI, labels and delivery documents

INDUSTRY APPLICATION

Industry, furnace, material and addition point

Confirm the process position before method and quantity calculations; an application relationship for one furnace or material must not be copied to another.

01

Steelmaking plants

Tap alloying or ladle trimming

Furnace / equipment
BOF/EAF tapping and LF/ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy steels with carbon-grade matching
02

Iron foundries

Charge calculation or post-melt Mn correction

Furnace / equipment
Cupola, induction and duplex routes
Material / output
Grey iron and designed alloyed cast irons

APPLICATION METHOD

Application method and effect validation

Calculate from net Mn increase and site recovery, constraining C, Si, P and S carry-in. Excess Mn in cast iron may promote carbides and chill.

  1. 01Confirm the target Mn content and the carbon-content limit
  2. 02Select carbon grade and addition point
  3. 03Add and ensure dissolution/mixing
  4. 04Verify Mn and structure/performance

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

From operating objective to effect verification

Each application explains the role, method, quantity principle and risk boundary; the final proposal is confirmed against operating conditions and lot documents.

01

Steelmaking plants

Tap alloying or ladle trimming

Furnace / equipment
BOF/EAF tapping and LF/ladle
Material / output
Carbon and low-alloy steels with carbon-grade matching
Method
Normally avoid a strongly oxidising stage; use the tapping stream or stirring under controlled slag, selecting low-carbon grades for low-carbon steel.
Quantity determination
Calculate from net Mn increase, measured product Mn and site recovery; check C, Si, P and S carry-in.
Expected effects
  • Adjusts Mn, supports deoxidation and contributes to strength/hardenability in suitable grades
Limits and risks
  • High-carbon grades may exceed the carbon target; oxidising slag lowers recovery
02

Iron foundries

Charge calculation or post-melt Mn correction

Furnace / equipment
Cupola, induction and duplex routes
Material / output
Grey iron and designed alloyed cast irons
Method
Add from furnace analysis and allow dissolution/homogenisation; a Mn adjustment alloy does not replace an inoculant.
Quantity determination
Calculate from target Mn and recovery, then check sulfur and target matrix.
Expected effects
  • Establishes target Mn and supports matrix control
Limits and risks
  • Excess Mn may promote carbides/white iron and reduce machinability

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Keep dry, control fines/dust and follow hot-metal charging procedures.

This section does not replace the company's final SDS/PSI or the plant safety procedure.

REFERENCE AND ORDER BOUNDARY

Use industry references to understand, then order documents to confirm

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

Document availability depends on the product, lot, destination market and order agreement.

TDS

Confirms product identity, guaranteed indicators, sizing, form and packing.

SDS / PSI

Confirms storage, handling, protection and market-specific safety information.

COA

Links a specific lot to test items, results, methods and issue information.
