QUICK DECISION

Four answers before reading the technical detail

This section supports initial screening; final grade, addition and effects require operating conditions, formal documents and plant validation.

01

What it is

Chromium alloying for stainless/alloy steels, cast steel and wear-resistant alloyed iron; the carbon grade determines the addition route.

02

What it does

  • Chromium alloying
  • Corrosion/wear resistance
  • Hardenability
03

Where it fits

  • Furnace bulk alloying or post-refining low-carbon trimming
  • Bulk furnace alloying and pre-tap trimming
04

Boundary not to miss

  • Without decarburisation, high-carbon material may exceed C; undissolved large lumps can segregate
  • Incorrect chemistry or heat treatment can cause brittleness, segregation and machining difficulty

SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

Assess carbon grade, Cr content, addition point and decarburisation capability together. High-carbon ferrochrome cannot unconditionally replace low-carbon material without downstream decarburisation.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

High-carbon/charge ferrochrome is commonly smelted from chromite and carbonaceous reductants in a high-temperature electric furnace; low-carbon grades may use downstream refining or silicothermic routes.

  1. 01Prepare and batch chromite
  2. 02Electric-furnace reduction smelting
  3. 03Tap and cast
  4. 04Refine low-carbon grades by a dedicated route
  5. 05Crush, screen, test and pack

INDUSTRY APPLICATION

Industry, furnace, material and addition point

Confirm the process position before method and quantity calculations; an application relationship for one furnace or material must not be copied to another.

APPLICATION METHOD

Application method and effect validation

High-carbon material suits early addition with downstream decarburisation; low/micro-carbon material suits carbon-constrained trimming. Calculate from net Cr and treat carbon carry-in as a hard constraint.

  1. 01Confirm Cr target and decarburisation capability
  2. 02Select carbon grade and timing
  3. 03Ensure temperature, residence and stirring
  4. 04Verify Cr/C and segregation risk

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

From operating objective to effect verification

Each application explains the role, method, quantity principle and risk boundary; the final proposal is confirmed against operating conditions and lot documents.

01

Steelmaking plants

Furnace bulk alloying or post-refining low-carbon trimming

Furnace / equipment
EAF, AOD/VOD and LF/ladle
Material / output
Stainless, alloy and tool steels
Method
Charge/high-carbon grades suit early addition where downstream decarburisation exists; low/micro-carbon grades suit carbon-constrained trimming.
Quantity determination
Calculate from net Cr increase, measured Cr and recovery, with product carbon carry-in as a hard constraint.
Expected effects
  • Establishes target Cr for corrosion, heat, wear or hardenability performance
Limits and risks
  • Without decarburisation, high-carbon material may exceed C; undissolved large lumps can segregate
02

Iron foundries

Bulk furnace alloying and pre-tap trimming

Furnace / equipment
Induction, duplex or special EAF route
Material / output
High-chromium white iron and designed wear/heat-resistant alloyed irons
Method
Allow time for bulk/difficult additions, then sample and trim before tap; high-Cr white iron does not default to strong grey-iron inoculation.
Quantity determination
Calculate from target Cr, residual Cr in returns and recovery, then check carbon and heat treatment.
Expected effects
  • Builds the designed Cr alloy system and wear-resistant carbides
Limits and risks
  • Incorrect chemistry or heat treatment can cause brittleness, segregation and machining difficulty

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Control dust and moisture; the final SDS must cover product form, fume exposure and destination rules.

This section does not replace the company's final SDS/PSI or the plant safety procedure.

REFERENCE AND ORDER BOUNDARY

Use industry references to understand, then order documents to confirm

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

DOCUMENTS & MEDIA

Images, TDS, SDS and COA

Document availability depends on the product, lot, destination market and order agreement.

TDS

Confirms product identity, guaranteed indicators, sizing, form and packing.

SDS / PSI

Confirms storage, handling, protection and market-specific safety information.

COA

Links a specific lot to test items, results, methods and issue information.
