QUICK DECISION

Four answers before reading the technical detail

This section supports initial screening; final grade, addition and effects require operating conditions, formal documents and plant validation.

01

What it is

A chromium-metal family bounded by GB/T 3211—2023.

02

What it does

  • Chromium addition
  • Charge selection with controlled iron and carbon carry-in
  • High-alloy chemistry trimming
03

Where it fits

  • Charge make-up, melting-stage alloying or an approved chemistry-trimming stage
04

Boundary not to miss

  • An unverified production route, purity, sizing or associated impurity profile can cause dissolution difficulty, chemistry deviation, inclusions or safety risk

SELECTION BOUNDARY

Start with the selection boundary

Chromium metal is not an automatic substitute for ferrochrome, chromium silicon alloy, nitrided ferrochrome or high-nitrogen ferrochrome, and its name does not establish electrolytic chromium, high-purity chromium or chromium powder. Confirm the production route, formal grade, Cr and impurities, form, sizing, dissolution conditions and SDS/PSI; no purity, stock or supply is promised without an SKU/TDS/COA.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURING

Product manufacturing process

Chromium metal may be made from chromium oxide by a verified metallothermic-reduction route or by an electrolytic or another industrial route. Different routes have different impurity sources, forms and quality-control priorities. Commercial preparation generally includes feed and route confirmation, reduction or electrodeposition, any required refining, degassing or purification, forming or crushing, sorting, representative sampling and lot testing; the manufacturer must declare the actual route.

  1. 01Confirm chromium-bearing feed, reductant or electrolyte system, production route and lot traceability
  2. 02Complete metallothermic reduction, electrodeposition or another verified preparation step used by the actual route
  3. 03Apply refining, degassing, purification or contamination control required by the use and form the commercial product
  4. 04Crush or sort, homogenise and sample representatively
  5. 05Test Cr, route-related impurities, form, sizing and pack

SPECIFICATIONS & PACKAGING

Grades, specifications, indicators and packaging

Chromium metal is not ferrochrome. Its order specification must use the applicable standard, supplier TDS and purchase agreement to fix the formal grade, production route, Cr content and route- or application-related impurities such as Fe, Si, Al, C, S and P. Special-alloy or high-purity uses require separate agreement on O, N, H and other trace elements, form, sizing, packing, sampling and test methods. This page does not default to a high-purity, electrolytic or powder product.

  1. 01Confirm the applicable standard revision, formal grade, manufacturer and actual production route
  2. 02Check Cr, Fe, Si, Al, C, S, P and application-specific trace elements
  3. 03Fix the form, sizing and contamination control for lump, flake, granule or separately reviewed powder
  4. 04Confirm packing, SDS, sampling method, lot COA and document change control

GRADES & SPECIFICATIONS

Grades, specifications, indicators and packaging

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

ORDER SPECIFICATION CONFIRMATION

What must be confirmed before this becomes an order specification

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

  1. 01Confirm the product, grade, application and supply scope
  2. 02Fix guaranteed chemistry, sizing, form and packing in the quotation and order
  3. 03Agree sampling, test methods, acceptance rules and lot COA fields
  4. 04Confirm the required TDS, SDS/PSI, labels and delivery documents

SELECTION AND COMPARISON

Compare specification directions by indicators and operating conditions

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.

INDUSTRY APPLICATION

Industry, furnace, material and addition point

Confirm the process position before method and quantity calculations; an application relationship for one furnace or material must not be copied to another.

01

Steelmaking plants

Charge make-up, melting-stage alloying or an approved chemistry-trimming stage

Furnace / equipment
Vacuum induction, vacuum-arc remelting, EAF/LF or another reviewed high-alloy melting route
Material / output
High-alloy steels or suitable alloys requiring Cr addition with constrained iron, carbon and other impurity budgets

APPLICATION METHOD

Application method and effect validation

Chromium metal may serve as a chromium source in special steels, nickel-base or other specialised-alloy practices where impurity carry-in is constrained, but the target-material specification and process owner must confirm suitability. The addition must be mass-balanced from initial and target melt Cr, charge carry-in, measured lot Cr and site recovery, while checking carry-in of Fe, C, Si, Al and gaseous elements. No fixed dose is published across furnace types.

  1. 01Confirm target alloy, furnace, initial and target Cr, and all critical impurity ceilings
  2. 02Review whether the actual route, lot TDS/COA and form meet the target-material specification
  3. 03Deduct charge carry-in and calculate addition from measured Cr and site recovery
  4. 04After controlled addition, complete dissolution and mixing, resample to verify chemistry, structure and performance

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

From operating objective to effect verification

Each application explains the role, method, quantity principle and risk boundary; the final proposal is confirmed against operating conditions and lot documents.

01

Steelmaking plants

Charge make-up, melting-stage alloying or an approved chemistry-trimming stage

Furnace / equipment
Vacuum induction, vacuum-arc remelting, EAF/LF or another reviewed high-alloy melting route
Material / output
High-alloy steels or suitable alloys requiring Cr addition with constrained iron, carbon and other impurity budgets
Method
Choose the grade and addition point from charge and melt analysis, target Cr, impurity budget, dissolution capability and actual product form; keep it dry, ensure complete melting and homogenisation, then close the loop with sample results.
Quantity determination
Use a mass balance for the net target Cr increase and lot-measured chemistry, while checking Fe, C, Si, Al and other controlled-impurity carry-in; no fixed dose is published before trial confirmation.
Expected effects
  • Provides chromium adjustment where iron, carbon and impurity budgets are controlled
Limits and risks
  • An unverified production route, purity, sizing or associated impurity profile can cause dissolution difficulty, chemistry deviation, inclusions or safety risk

STORAGE & SAFETY

Storage, handling and risk

  • Keep the actual form dry, segregated and protected from contamination; control crushing, transfer and possible fines risks, and manage ventilation, ignition sources and PPE under the applicable SDS/PSI.

This section does not replace the company's final SDS/PSI or the plant safety procedure.

REFERENCE AND ORDER BOUNDARY

Use industry references to understand, then order documents to confirm

Supply specifications, packaging, lead time and quality documents are subject to the formal quotation and order confirmation.
